The gray in the old ML's beard is showing through the Grecian Formula. This thing needs a makeover, from its boxy exterior shape to its old-looking interior. Mercedes-Benz has much better interiors today-take the E-Class, for instance-and going from the E to the ML is like taking a couple of steps backward. I know a redesign is in the works for the ML, but it can't come soon enough for me.

The V8 in this is the best part of the truck. The power comes on strong whenever you need it. The seats are very supportive and quite comfortable, and that's a good thing because overall, the ride is pretty truck-like.

There's a good amount of body roll, and in the gale-force winds on my drive in I was pushed all over the road. I had to leave my double latte in the cupholder another item needing an update and keep both hands on the wheel just to keep this thing pointed in the right direction.

While I don't always like steering wheel-mounted controls, this is a truck that really needs it. To tune the radio or adjust the volume, you need quite a reach, and because of the small controls on the radio, you need to take your eyes off the road to do it. Not the best design. For that kind of cash, there's a handful of newer nicer? Until Mercedes updates the ML, whoever buys one must really need to have that three-pointed star in their garage.

There is some serious old-think going on at Mercedes, and it is not to this vehicle's benefit. If the company doesn't come out with a replacement for the ML soon-and have a truck-model lineup replacement strategy in its back pocket-then it is going to be hurting cowboys for sure. Think about what this little truck did: And ever since it has sat on its laurels. There is a huge disconnect between this and the up-line G-Wagen, which is okay, because that truck is an all-purpose, all-terrain stomper.

This is a country club runner, an image machine that has to perform and do it like no other car or truck or ute in the world. That isn't the case anymore.

I do love the utility of all that open space in the back. But it should have two additional seats-and continue to have superb cargo-carrying room.

It should be something my wife wants to own she does, but she's also into the Range Rover mind-set, so what I have here is a maintenance issue-hers, not the trucks'. Perhaps the new GST will do the trick, fit the need and the image. But before that happens, M-B should be on the case now to redefine and redesign its M-Class. Every time I get into an ML I'm less and less impressed. One of the biggest things I noticed on my ride back and forth to work was the wind noise in the cabin. There's quite a racket in there at freeway speeds, just one of the things a luxury ute in this price range should not be guilty of.

With its body-on-frame design, it is rugged enough, I suppose, but again, is this supposed to be a luxury truck or a luxury ute? Where are the comfort settings, the trick air shocks, etc.? The interior has its moments, with nice leather appointments and the like, but the cheap-looking, dated gauge treatments and lack of steering wheel controls drag it down some. On the road, it tends to smack the bumps pretty good, and at freeway speeds the steering feel is far from confidence-inspiring. And as the top-of-the-range ML not counting AMG , it should also have seven-passenger seating, for sure.
